How to Calculate Exact Age and Time Lived

Why age isn't just this year minus your birth year

The mental shortcut almost everyone uses — current year minus birth year — only gets your age right by luck, and it's wrong by one for a large chunk of every year. The reason is simple: your age goes up only after your birthday has passed. Subtracting the years throws away the month and day, which are exactly what decides whether you've finished another full cycle.

Take someone born on 15 Dec 1990, calculated on 30 Jun 2026. The naive subtraction gives 2026 − 1990 = 36. But the December birthday hasn't arrived yet in 2026, so the person is 35, not 36. The correct rule has two steps:

1. Take the year difference (2026 − 1990 = 36).
2. If the birthday hasn't happened yet this year — today's month/day is earlier than the birth month/day — subtract 1.

Counting years, months and days correctly

To go past the round number and say "27 years, 10 months, 10 days", the method is the same column subtraction with borrowing you learned at school, just across three places: day, month, year. Calling the birth date A and today's date B:

An example that needs borrowing. Born 25 Mar 1995, today 10 Jun 2026:

• days = 10 − 25 = −15 → negative. The month before June is May, with 31 days: 10 − 25 + 31 = 16 days, and months becomes 3 − 1 = 2.
• months = 2 (already adjusted) — positive, leave it.
• years = 2026 − 1995 = 31.

Result: 31 years, 2 months, 16 days. Check it the other way: 25 Mar 1995 to 25 Mar 2026 is 31 years; add 2 months to reach 25 May 2026; from 25 May to 10 Jun is 16 days. It matches. Order matters — always settle the days before the months, because borrowing days changes the month count. Leap years and the February 29 edge case

A leap year has 366 days because it gains February 29. The rule: divisible by 4, except century years that aren't divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2000 are leap years; 1900 and 2100 are not. This already complicates counting in days, because two "one-year" stretches can hold 365 or 366 days depending on where they fall.

The famous case is people born on February 29 — "leaplings". For a date like 29 Feb 2000, the "real" birthday only exists every four years: 2004, 2008, 2012, and so on. In common years, with no February 29, it's unclear exactly when the person ticks over to the next age.

For day counting the effect is concrete: someone who has lived 24 years from 29 Feb 2000 crossed six February 29ths (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024), and each one added an "extra" day to the total. Ignoring leap days makes a day-based age drift further off over time.

Age in other units: days, weeks, hours

Years and months are how humans read age, but sometimes the raw total is what matters — for a milestone ("today is your 10,000th day"), a statistic, or a length-of-service calculation. The golden rule is to count the real days between the two dates, every February 29 included, and never approximate with a flat 365.

Take someone born on 30 Jun 2000 who turns exactly 26 on 30 Jun 2026. Six February 29ths fall inside that span (2004 through 2024), so:

What's the difference between "age" and "time lived"?

"Age" usually means the number of completed years — 35, 40, 18. "Time lived" is the full breakdown: years, months and days, and sometimes the total in hours or weeks. Age is a special case of time lived, rounded down at your last birthday.

Does age change at the exact time of birth or at midnight?

For civil purposes the whole day counts: you "have your birthday" at the start of the day, regardless of the clock time you were born. The exact time only matters when you want time lived down to the hour and minute.

I was born on February 29. When is my birthday in a common year?

There's no single agreed answer. A common reading completes the new age on March 1, on the grounds that the year only closes after February 28; many people, though, celebrate on the 28th. In leap years the question disappears, because the 29th exists.

Why did two calculators give me a different age in days?
