The Amazon River runs for about 6,992 km. A 2007 Brazilian expedition led by INPE (National Institute for Space Research) put it ahead of the Nile by roughly 140 km, which would make it the longest river in the world. To work out a partial stretch, take the total length and multiply by the fraction you want: distance = 6992 × fraction, with the fraction running from 0 at the source to 1 at the mouth.

It starts at the Nevado Mismi glacier in the Peruvian Andes, around 5,597 m up, and drains into the Atlantic between Macapá and Belém in Brazil. Its average discharge of 209,000 m³/s is about a fifth of all the freshwater reaching the world's oceans, more than the next seven largest rivers put together. Of the whole course, the roughly 3,700 km from Iquitos (Peru) down to the mouth can take large ocean‑going vessels.

Is the Amazon longer than the Nile? Brazilian researchers (INPE/IBGE, 2007–2008) came up with 6,992 km against 6,853 km for the Nile. The question is far from settled internationally, and most English‑language sources still put the Nile in first place.

How much of the river is navigable? Ocean ships can reach as far as Iquitos, about 3,700 km in. Beyond that, smaller boats keep going upstream into the Peruvian and Ecuadorian tributaries.

Why does the discharge vary so much? The basin has a heavy wet season from December to May. During those months the river at Manaus can climb more than 10 m, so the flow is far higher than in the dry stretch from June to November.
