Ant Venom Dose per Sting (mg)
A stinging ant pushes venom out of a paired gland that feeds into a modified ovipositor, the sting itself. To estimate how much goes in per hit, multiply three things: D = gland_volume × venom_concentration × injection_efficiency. Take the fire ant Solenopsis invicta (lava-pé): a single sting delivers something like 0.04–0.08 mg. Most of that is the piperidine alkaloid solenopsin, which makes up over 95% of the venom's dry mass, with a small protein fraction left over to drive the allergenic IgE response.
Across the Neotropics the picture changes a lot from species to species. Arboreal Pseudomyrmex carry a peptide-rich venom. The bullet ant Paraponera clavata, along with the related giant black ant Pachycondyla (saúva-do-Pará in some regions), tops out at 4 on the Schmidt sting pain index — a sensation Schmidt likened to “walking over flaming charcoal with a 3-inch rusty nail in your heel”. Leafcutter Atta queens have no working sting, but their bite hurts plenty.
Applications
Dose estimates feed into mouse LD₅₀ assays in toxicology, help allergy clinics rank risk for hypersensitive patients, and back label compliance for ant-control products registered under ANVISA RDC 36/2015 (domestic sanitizing products) and with IBAMA for agricultural use.
FAQ
Are ant stings dangerous to humans? A single sting leaves a local pustule and some pain. The real systemic danger is anaphylaxis in people who are already sensitized, which becomes far more likely during the massive multi-sting attacks a Solenopsis swarm can mount.
How does fire ant venom differ from bee venom? Bee venom is mostly protein, things like melittin and phospholipase A2. Fire ant venom runs the other way: small lipophilic alkaloids that work as hemolytic and cytotoxic agents, which is why they need their own immunotherapy preparation.
What is the Schmidt sting pain index? It's a 0–4 scale that entomologist Justin Schmidt built by letting hundreds of hymenopteran stings hit him and rating each one. A sweat bee sits at 1.0, a honey bee at 2.0, and the bullet ant at 4.0.
