Ant Colony Population Estimation
How big an ant colony gets depends heavily on the species. You can make a rough guess with N = workers per queen × queens per colony, though field surveys tend to lean on known ranges per species instead. Fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) run 100,000–500,000 individuals. Leaf-cutters (Atta spp.) hit 5–8 million once a nest matures. Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) go further still, building supercolonies of many millions of workers stretched across kilometres.
Inside a colony you'll usually find a caste structure: one or more reproductive queens, sterile female workers, in some species soldiers built for defence, and the short-lived winged males that only show up for the nuptial flights. The final population is shaped by how old the colony is, how much food it can find, and the local climate.
Applications
It comes in handy for myrmecology fieldwork, for planning pest control in agriculture, for urban entomology surveys and for teaching ecology. Much of the field grew out of E. O. Wilson's early work on social insects and how they communicate chemically.
FAQ
How many ants live in a typical leaf-cutter nest? A mature Atta colony can hold 5 to 8 million ants, with tunnels dug out across dozens of square metres of subsoil.
Do all colonies have a single queen? No. A monogyne colony keeps one queen, but polygyne species (many fire ant populations among them) run dozens or even hundreds of queens at the same time.
How are colony sizes actually measured? Researchers count bait visits, run marked-recapture studies, dig out the whole nest, or measure mound area by remote sensing and apply density coefficients specific to the species.

Calculate the particle Reynolds number in settling, Re_p = (ρ_w·v_s·d) ÷ μ, from the fluid density ρ_w (kg/m³), the settling velocity v_s (m/s), the particle diameter d (m) and the dynamic viscosity μ (Pa·s). The particle Reynolds number characterizes the flow regime around a particle settling (or being transported) in a fluid, comparing inertial and viscous forces. Its value sets WHICH settling-velocity formula is valid: for Re_p < ~1, the flow around the particle is LAMINAR and Stokes' Law holds (drag proportional to velocity); for Re_p > ~1000, the flow is TURBULENT and Newton's law holds (drag proportional to velocity squared); in the intermediate range, transition correlations are used (such as Allen's or drag-coefficient expressions vs Re_p). So when computing a settling velocity by Stokes' Law, it is ESSENTIAL to verify afterwards that Re_p < 1 — if not, the Stokes result is wrong and the correct regime's formula must be used. The particle Reynolds number is thus the 'checker' that validates the settling calculation, and it is central in designing settling tanks, classifying particles and hydraulic solids transport. Compute the number of actual plates of a distillation column, N_actual = N_theoretical / (efficiency/100), from the number of theoretical (equilibrium) plates and the column's overall efficiency (%).
