Baby Formula Amount

Estimates daily formula volume by baby age and per bottle.

โ€”

Infant formula intake by age

How much formula a baby needs per day comes down to weight and age. A baby between 0 and 6 months who isn't breastfed drinks around 150 mL/kg/day as a working reference, spread across 6 to 8 bottles. Once solids start coming in, from 6 to 12 months, that figure falls to roughly 100–120 mL/kg/day. For most powdered formulas the dilution stays fixed at 1 scoop per 30 mL of water that has been boiled and cooled to about 40°C.

In Brazil, infant formula falls under ANVISA RDC 43/2011 and RDC 44/2011, which sort products into starter formula (0–6 m), follow-on (6–12 m) and growing-up milk (1–3 y). You'll see brands like Nan SupérPremium, Aptamil Profutura, Nan Comfort and Enfamil Premium on the shelf. Both the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) and WHO still put exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months first; formula is what you reach for when breastfeeding isn't an option.

Applications

Parents lean on this estimate to plan the month's shopping (a 400 g can makes about 2.6 L of reconstituted milk) and keep an eye on the household budget, while pediatricians and nutritionists use it during well-baby visits to spot a baby getting too little or too much. Daycare centers run the same numbers to schedule bottles per shift.

FAQ

Can I dilute the formula more to make the can last longer? No. Watering it down leads to malnutrition and hyponatremia, and going the other way overloads the kidneys. Stick to the 1 scoop : 30 mL ratio.

How long can prepared formula stay at room temperature? Around 1 hour out on the counter, or 24 h in the fridge at 2–4°C. Once the bottle has touched the baby's mouth, throw out whatever is left, since it's a contamination risk.

Is cow's milk an alternative before 12 months? No. Whole cow's milk before the first birthday is linked to iron-deficiency anemia, occult intestinal bleeding and renal overload. When breast milk isn't available, use infant formula instead.
