Pulse duration from BPM: formula and example
The pulse is just the gap between beats: pulse_ms = 60000 / BPM. So at 120 BPM the pulse is 500 ms, at 60 BPM it is 1000 ms (1 s), and 90 BPM lands you around 667 ms. The old Italian tempo markings line up roughly with BPM ranges: Largo 40–60, Adagio 66–76, Andante 76–108, Moderato 108–120, Allegro 120–168, Presto 168–200.
Context and applications
Instrumentalists lean on the pulse to set up metronome practice and to feel how fast a passage actually moves. DJs beatmatch by lining up pulses, and the math is unforgiving here: a 4 BPM mismatch at 128 BPM drifts each beat by about 16 ms, which you can hear after only a few bars. Choreographers count steps against the pulse. Runners build BPM playlists to lock in cadence, since a 180 BPM track maps neatly to a 180 step/min stride.
FAQ
Pulse in Hz? Frequency is just the inverse of the period: Hz = BPM / 60. That puts 120 BPM at 2 Hz.
Why does the same BPM feel different across styles? What you perceive comes down to subdivision. A half-time hip-hop track at 140 BPM feels more like 70 BPM, because the backbeat lands on beat 3 instead of beats 2 and 4.
Is there a fastest playable BPM? Skilled drummers can push single-stroke rolls to roughly 1000–1200 strokes per minute. As an actual musical pulse, though, anything above 240 BPM usually gets re-felt as half-time at 120.
