Cada bit a mais na gravação de áudio acrescenta cerca de 6 dB de faixa dinâmica (a razão entre o som mais alto e o ruído de fundo). A fórmula é SNR ≈ 6,02 × bits + 1,76 dB. Por isso 16 bits (CD) dão ~98 dB e 24 bits (estúdio) ~146 dB.
