Bitcoin and satoshi
The satoshi (sat) is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, named after its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The math is short: 1 BTC = 10⁸ sats = 100,000,000 sats. Flip it around and 1 sat = 0.00000001 BTC. Example: with BTC at US$60,000, 1 sat is roughly US$0.0006, 1,000 sats around US$0.60, and 100,000 sats about US$60. In Brazilian reais with BTC at R$300,000, 1 sat comes out near R$0.003. People are reaching for the "sat" notation more and more because it spares you a string of tiny decimals on small amounts.
Applications
Think Lightning Network microtransactions, like tips, paywalls, or streaming sats per second. There's DCA (dollar-cost averaging) with small recurring buys, and sat stacking, where you pile up sats steadily without staring at the BTC price. On-chain transaction fees get quoted in sats/vByte, and wallets such as Phoenix, Wallet of Satoshi, and Muun show balances in sats out of the box.
FAQ
Is there a unit smaller than satoshi? On-chain, no. The sat is the base unit. Lightning uses millisatoshis (msat = 10⁻³ sat) for routing, but only whole sats ever settle on-chain.
Why use sats instead of BTC? "5,000 sats" just lands better in your head than "0.00005 BTC", and you're far less likely to fumble a decimal point.
What is "bit"? An older unit where 1 bit = 100 sats = 10⁻⁶ BTC. It quietly fell out of use as sats took over.
How many sats will ever exist? 21 million BTC × 10⁸ = 2.1 quadrillion sats. That's the hard supply cap, full stop.
