Mortar bags per area

Take the area, multiply by the consumption per m², divide by the bag weight, then add a bit for waste. Consumption depends on the product. AC-I tile adhesive (indoor) → 4–5 kg/m²; AC-II (outdoor/wet areas) → 5–7 kg/m²; AC-III (façade/large format) → 6–8 kg/m²; render mortar → 20–30 kg/m² per cm of thickness. One standard 20 kg bag of AC-I covers roughly 4–5 m². Say you have 30 m² of indoor floor in AC-I: 30 × 5 = 150 kg, divided by 20 gives 8 bags, and once you tack on 10% loss you end up buying 9. Match the notched trowel to the tile size.

Applications and standards

Handy when you're getting a quote at BR Quartzolit, Votorantim Cimentos, Weber, pricing the bricklayer's labor per m², or just trying not to have half a pallet left over when the job wraps up. The Brazilian standard NBR 13281 classifies industrial mortars by mechanical strength, adhesion and water retention. NBR 14081 is the one that covers tile adhesives (AC-I, AC-II, AC-III) for ceramic and porcelain tiles.

FAQ

Which type for the bathroom? Go with AC-II or AC-III. They hold up to the humidity and temperature swings you get in wet areas.

Why does consumption vary so much? The layer thickness shifts with tile size, trowel notch (6, 8, 10 mm) and how flat the substrate is. Large-format porcelain eats up noticeably more material.

Can I store an opened bag? Adhesive mortar pulls in moisture fast, so keep it sealed and dry and try to use it within 1–2 weeks. If a bag has gone hard, throw it out.
