Blackjack basic strategy
Basic strategy tells you the mathematically best move (Hit, Stand, Double, or Split) for every pairing of player total against dealer up-card. Each entry comes from working out the expected value of the decision against the dealer's fixed rule, which is usually to stand on 17. Play the whole table correctly and the house edge drops to about 0.5%, roughly the best deal you'll find on a casino floor. Say you're holding a hard 16 against a dealer 10: the table tells you to Hit, because Stand loses more over the long run. Card counting goes a step further. The Hi-Lo system that Edward Thorp made famous in Beat the Dealer (1962) tracks the ratio of high cards to low ones and can actually tip the edge toward the player, which is exactly why casinos watch for it and shuffle to shut it down.
Applications
It shows up in casual play at legal casinos and online, where blackjack stays a favorite. Teachers also lean on it to explain conditional probability and expected-value analysis, intro statistics courses use it for decision-theory examples, and it turns up in game-theory work on imperfect information.
FAQ
Does basic strategy guarantee winning? No. What it does is shrink your expected loss. Across a lot of hands you still drop about 0.5% of everything you bet on average, but that's a far cry from playing on gut feel, which hands the house 2-5%.
Is card counting illegal? In most places, no. But a casino is a private business, so it can show a suspected counter the door anyway.
Why never take insurance? Insurance is really a side bet that the dealer is holding blackjack, and the math runs against you. Its expected value stays negative for the player unless you're counting and you already know the deck is loaded with tens.
