Cholesterol Ratio (Total/HDL)

Calculate the total cholesterol to HDL ratio, an indicator of cardiovascular risk. Below 3.5 is ideal; above 5 points to high risk for your heart.

Total cholesterol / HDL ratio

The TC/HDL ratio divides total cholesterol by HDL: ratio = TC / HDL. Plug in TC = 200 mg/dL and HDL = 50 mg/dL and you get a ratio of 4.0. How to read it: < 3.5 ideal, 3.5–5.0 intermediate, > 5.0 elevated cardiovascular risk. For a long time it was treated as a sharper predictor of coronary events than total cholesterol on its own, and the Framingham Heart Study leaned on it a lot. These days the AHA tends to favor LDL-C along with broader tools like the ASCVD risk score. One number worth tracking alongside it is non-HDL cholesterol (TC − HDL), since it captures all the atherogenic lipoproteins at once: LDL, VLDL, IDL, Lp(a).

Applications

You will see it in cardiovascular screening, hospital admission panels and routine lab reports. It also shows up when deciding whether to start a statin (read together with the ASCVD score) and when following someone with dyslipidemia over time. Patients tend to find it easy to follow, since it folds two numbers into a single value they can watch.

FAQ

Is the ratio better than LDL? It holds up well as a predictor, but current guidelines put the weight on LDL-C and non-HDL together with global risk (ASCVD). Treat the ratio as something that rounds out the picture rather than stands in for the rest.

What if HDL is very high? A very high HDL (> 80 mg/dL) pulls the ratio down by arithmetic alone, but that does not always mean lower risk. At those extremes the HDL can be dysfunctional.

Fasting required? Current guidelines no longer insist on fasting for total cholesterol and HDL. Triglycerides and calculated LDL are a different story, and 9–12h fasting is still the usual advice there.

Total Reduction Ratio

Calculate the total reduction ratio of a three-stage comminution circuit, RR_total = RR₁ × RR₂ × RR₃, multiplying the reduction ratios of each crusher/mill in series. The dimensionless result is the circuit's overall size reduction — from bench rock blocks (hundreds of mm) to fine particles (mm or µm). Since each stage has a limited reduction ratio (4 to 10 for crushers), large total reductions (100, 1000 or more) require several stages in series: primary, secondary, tertiary crushing and milling. Eccentricity Ratio

Calculate the eccentricity ratio of a hydrodynamic bearing, ε = e ÷ c, dividing the eccentricity e (shaft centre offset from bearing centre) by the radial clearance c. The result (between 0 and 1) describes the shaft position within the bearing under load: ε = 0 means a centred shaft (no load); ε near 1 means the shaft nearly touches the bearing (heavily loaded, minimum film at the limit). Eccentricity grows with load and decreases with viscosity and speed. The minimum film thickness is h_min = c·(1 − ε). Enter the eccentricity and the radial clearance.

Burke Ratio

Computes the Burke ratio: the excess return over the risk-free rate divided by the square root of the sum of squared drawdowns. Unlike the Sharpe ratio, which penalizes all volatility, Burke focuses only on the falls, and by squaring each drawdown it punishes deep falls more than shallow ones. It's one of the tail-risk-adjusted performance metrics. Enter the portfolio return, the risk-free rate and the list of drawdowns in percent.

Crushing Reduction Ratio

Calculate the reduction ratio of a crusher or mill, RR = F ÷ P, dividing the feed size F by the product size P (usually F₈₀/P₈₀ or crusher openings). The dimensionless result shows how many times the material was reduced in size in one stage. Each equipment type has a typical reduction ratio range: jaw crushers 4-7, cone crushers 5-8, ball mills up to 100 or more. Since each stage has a limited ratio, reducing large blocks to fine powder requires several stages in series, whose product of ratios gives the total reduction. Enter the feed and product sizes.

Tail Ratio

Computes the tail ratio of a return series: the absolute value of the 95th percentile divided by that of the 5th percentile. It compares the size of extreme gains with extreme losses — a tail ratio above one means the right tail (gains) is larger than the left (losses), a desirable asymmetric profile. Below one, extreme losses dominate. It's a quick snapshot of the asymmetry at the ends of the distribution. Enter the list of returns separated by commas.
