Solar panel efficiency: from cell to module
Efficiency is defined as η = peak_power / (irradiance · area), measured at STC (1000 W/m², 25 °C, AM 1.5). Where do real panels land in 2024? Monocrystalline silicon runs 20-22%, polycrystalline sits a bit lower at 17-19%, HIT/HJT climbs to 22-25%, and a perovskite-silicon tandem clears 26% in commercial modules. Lab cells go further still, with the LONGi record from December 2023 hitting 33%. The hard ceiling for single-junction silicon is the Shockley-Queisser limit at 33.7%. Run the numbers on a 400 W panel of 1.95 m² at 1000 W/m² and you get η = 400 / (1000 · 1.95) = 20.5%. What you actually harvest is 10-25% less once you account for temperature, dust, shading and inverter losses, so fold in the performance ratio (PR, usually 0.75-0.85) when you size a system.
Applications
People reach for this when working out photovoltaic ROI, sizing residential and commercial systems, or planning agrivoltaic projects that grow crops under the panels. It also helps when comparing brands on $/W and when checking compliance with Brazil's Law 14.300/2022 on distributed micro and minigeneration.
FAQ
Is more efficient always better? It depends on your roof. If space is tight, then yes, squeeze out every watt. But when you have room to spare, cheaper polycrystalline can win on $/kWh.
Does efficiency drop over time? It does, roughly 0.4-0.8% per year. Even so, a good panel is still putting out 80-85% of its rated power after 25 years.
What is bifacial? These modules also pick up light bouncing onto their back side. How much extra you get, anywhere from 5 to 25%, comes down to how reflective the ground beneath them is.
