How ERC-20 transfer cost works

An ERC-20 token transfer on Ethereum mainnet burns around ~65,000 gas, against ~21,000 gas for a plain ETH transfer, because the call has to update the token contract's balance mapping. The cost in ETH works out to gas ร— gas price (in gwei) รท 10โน; for dollars, multiply that by the ETH/USD price. So at 30 gwei with ETH at US$ 3,500, sending USDT or USDC runs 65,000 ร— 30 ร— 10โปโน = 0.00195 ETH, roughly US$ 6.83. The ERC-20s people move most are stablecoins like USDT, USDC and DAI, though a few, PAXG among them, carry extra logic that pushes gas past 100k. A single ERC-20 transfer costs more than batching through meta-transactions or ERC-1271 contracts, and Layer 2 rollups such as Arbitrum, Optimism, Base and zkSync cut the bill by 10 to 100ร— because they spread L1 calldata over many transactions.

Applications

Budgeting a DeFi strategy means pricing deposits and withdrawals on Aave, Compound or Curve. There is stablecoin remittance too, like sending USDT out of Brazil for an international payment, where you weigh mainnet against L2. The same math feeds Uniswap or 1inch swap quotes, the mainnet-vs-L2 call (Base usually wins under US$ 0.10), and merchant gateways gauging how much the fee eats into checkout.

FAQ

Why does ERC-20 cost more than ETH transfer? It runs the contract's transfer() function, which reads and writes storage slots. Each write runs you 20,000 gas, while a plain transfer just flips two account balances.

Does the token type change the cost? It does. Figure USDC around 65k gas and USDT around 55k, while tokens with fee-on-transfer or rebasing logic can climb past 150k. Brand-new contracts, where the storage slots are still cold, cost more on the first interaction.

Is L2 always cheaper? For transfers, almost always; Base and Arbitrum land 50-100ร— below mainnet. The catch is that getting onto L2 means bridging your tokens in first, and that bridge is itself a mainnet transaction.

Bid-Ask Spread

Computes the bid-ask spread of an asset: the difference between the ask (sell) price and the bid (buy) price, the midpoint between them and the spread as a percentage of that midpoint. The spread is the invisible cost of trading and a direct measure of liquidity: liquid instruments have a tight spread, illiquid ones a wide spread. As a percentage, it lets you compare the cost across assets of different prices. Enter the bid and ask prices.

Effective Spread (Microstructure)

Computes the effective spread of a trade: twice the distance between the price at which the trade actually executed and the midpoint between the best bid and best ask at that moment. Unlike the quoted spread, which measures the bid-ask difference, the effective spread captures the real cost the investor paid, accounting for where the order actually filled in the book. The result comes in absolute value and as a percentage of the midpoint. Enter the trade price and the midpoint.
