Seedling spacing

Every crop comes with a recommended distance between plants and between rows. Some typical figures: tomato 50 cm in row × 80 cm between rows; lettuce 25 × 25 cm; carrot 5 × 20 cm; pumpkin 1 × 2 m; coffee 3 × 1 m. Packing plants closer together raises production per m², but it also brings more disease pressure, since ventilation drops and plants compete for light and nutrients. A quincunx (zigzag) layout fits more in than straight rows do, which is why you see it in orchards and reforestation work. As an example, a 4 m × 5 m bed of lettuce at 25 × 25 cm holds about 320 seedlings.

Applications

It comes in handy for commercial agriculture, home gardens, laying out vertical gardens and raised beds, agroforestry, and reforestation projects. It also gives you a quick estimate of how many seedlings you'll need, whether you're buying them or raising your own in a nursery.

FAQ

Can I plant denser to get more yield? Only up to a point. Push past it and fungi, mites, and the fight for light cut into per-plant yield, so the overall harvest actually drops.

What is intercropping? It's growing two species with different spacing in the same plot, like corn and bean together. They stay out of each other's way because they fill different niches.

Does spacing depend on the cultivar? It does. Determinate tomato (the bush type) can sit closer together than indeterminate (vine) tomato, which needs trellising and more room to spread.
