The seven-year rule is simply wrong
Multiplying by seven is easy and wrong. A one-year-old dog is already closer to a late teenager, and a twelve-year-old dog does not live like an 84-year-old person. Enter the age in years here, decimals included if you like (1.5 works), and you get the human equivalent from the logarithmic curve published in 2020, built on DNA methylation in Labrador Retrievers. One field, instant answer.
The formula is: human age = 16 x ln(dog age) + 31. Because it is a logarithm, the first year carries enormous weight. One dog year maps to 31 human years, 5 years to 56.8, and 10 years to only 67.8. After that each extra dog year adds less and less. The honest limitation: the study used Labradors and this page asks for age alone, with no size or breed field, so a chihuahua and a great dane get the same number.
Below one year the curve stops making sense. Six months returns roughly 20 human years, which describes no puppy anywhere. Use it from age one onward and read the number as a life-stage hint rather than a diagnosis: small breeds age more slowly, so a 12-year-old poodle is far less elderly than a 12-year-old mastiff. The calculation happens in your browser and your dog age never leaves the device.
