Net Carbs (Keto)

Subtracts fiber and half the sugar alcohols from total carbohydrate, all in grams, leaving the net carbs that count against a ketogenic daily limit.

Net carbs: what really counts in a keto diet

Net carbs = total carbohydrate − fiber − (part of the sugar alcohols/polyols). Why subtract those? Fiber doesn't raise blood glucose, since the small intestine doesn't absorb it, and most polyols (erythritol, xylitol, maltitol) are absorbed slowly or not at all. Example: a label showing 30 g of total carb, 8 g of fiber and 0 g of polyols leaves you with 22 g of net carbs per serving. A ketogenic diet usually aims for under 50 g/day, and some stricter protocols stay below 20 g, to push the liver into making ketones (β-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate) and tip the body into ketosis, where fat replaces glucose as the main fuel. Keep in mind that polyols aren't interchangeable. Erythritol subtracts ~100% because it leaves the body unchanged, while xylitol/maltitol only count partially since they still raise glucose. When you're unsure, count half the polyols.

Net carbs steer weight loss through ketogenic protocols. They also anchor the treatment of refractory epilepsy in children, which is the original clinical use, dating back to the 1920s at Mayo Clinic, where the diet cuts seizures even after drugs have failed. They guide type 2 diabetes management, since less carb means less insulin demand, and they shape low-carb product development (Quero-Quero Zero, Lacta Zero, low-carb breads from Wickbold and Pullman), which splash "net carbs" or "carboidratos líquidos" across the label. In tracking apps like Carb Manager or Cronometer you set the daily target in net carbs, not total carbs.

FAQ

Are net carbs an official metric? No. Brazilian ANVISA and US FDA both require total carbs on labels. "Net carbs" comes from the low-carb community, not from any regulator.

What is ketosis exactly? It's a metabolic state in which the liver builds ketone bodies from fatty acids and burns them for fuel, and you can measure it as blood ketones > 0.5 mmol/L. Don't confuse it with diabetic ketoacidosis, which climbs to 10–25 mmol/L and is dangerous.

Can I eat unlimited fiber on keto? For practical purposes, yes. Vegetables like broccoli, spinach and avocado are keto staples exactly because their high fiber drags net carbs down near zero.

Why doesn't erythritol count, but maltitol does? Erythritol gets absorbed in the small intestine and leaves through urine without ever being metabolized. Maltitol is partly digested and raises glucose about half as much as sugar (glycemic index ≈ 35).

Net Assimilation Rate (Gregory Formula)

Computes the net assimilation rate of a plant by the classic Gregory formula, the core of plant growth analysis. The rate is the dry matter gain per day multiplied by the ratio between the difference of the natural logarithms of the two leaf areas and the difference of the areas themselves: NAR = [(W2 − W1) ÷ interval] × [ln(A2) − ln(A1)] ÷ (A2 − A1). The result measures net photosynthetic efficiency per unit of leaf area, with respiration already discounted — typical values for annual crops in full growth lie between 5 and 15 grams per square metre of leaf per day, and a decline along the cycle indicates canopy self-shading. Gregory's (1926) logarithmic form was adopted rather than the approximation NAR = mass gain ÷ (mean leaf area × interval), because the former is exact when leaf area grows linearly with dry mass over the interval, which is the standard assumption of classic growth analysis. Enter the initial and final dry masses, the initial and final leaf areas and the interval between the two samplings.

Reservoir Net Pay

Compute a reservoir's net pay (net productive thickness) by multiplying the gross interval thickness by the net-to-gross ratio (N/G), the fraction of rock with enough porosity and permeability to produce. Shale layers, tight rock or water zones are discounted. The net pay, not the total thickness, is what enters the oil and gas volume calculations. Enter the gross thickness and the net-to-gross ratio.

Takes counts of promoters (9-10), passives (7-8) and detractors (0-6) and returns the NPS on the -100 to 100 scale, plus the band it falls in.

Cohen's h (Effect Size for Proportions)

Computes Cohen's h, the effect-size measure for the difference between two proportions. Comparing proportions directly is misleading, because the same arithmetic difference weighs differently near the middle (0.5) and near the ends (0 or 1). Cohen's h fixes this by applying the arcsine transformation, which stabilizes the variance, before measuring the distance. Usual convention: 0.2 is small, 0.5 medium and 0.8 large. Enter the two proportions (between 0 and 1).

Follower Max Velocity (SHM)

Calculate the maximum velocity of a simple-harmonic-motion cam follower, v_max = (π·h·ω) ÷ (2·β), from the total lift h (mm), the cam angular velocity ω (rad/s) and the rise angle β (rad). In simple harmonic motion, the follower velocity starts from zero (rest), rises to a MAXIMUM at mid-rise (when the follower passes mid-height) and returns to zero at the top. This peak matters for several reasons: it sets the speed the follower — and the coupled mass (valve, tool, part) — moves at, affecting inertia and dynamic forces; it influences cam-follower contact wear; and, with acceleration, it decides whether the follower can follow the cam without 'floating' (losing contact, jump, at high speeds). Maximum velocity grows linearly with the cam rotation ω and the lift h, and decreases with the rise angle β (more 'spread-out' rises are smoother). Comparing SHM with other motion laws (parabolic, cycloidal) by maximum velocity and acceleration is how the right law is chosen per application. Enter the lift, the cam angular velocity and the rise angle.
