Turning treadmill speed into running pace

The treadmill says 11.5 km/h, your watch and everyone in your running group talk in minutes per kilometre, and doing that conversion in your head mid-workout is not going to happen. Type the speed and the pace comes out formatted in minutes and seconds per km. Useful both for reading a treadmill panel and for checking that your race target matches the pace you actually train at.

Pace is the inverse of speed: minutes per km equal 60 divided by km/h. Because it is an inverse, the gains are not linear. Going from 10 to 11 km/h shaves 33 seconds per kilometre; going from 15 to 16 km/h shaves only 15. That is why getting faster costs more and more as you approach your ceiling. Seconds are rounded to the nearest whole one, so you may see a one-second difference from your watch.

This page converts km/h into pace only. For the reverse, turn the pace into decimal minutes (5:30 becomes 5.5) and divide 60 by it. Two cautions: a treadmill belt is not calibrated like a track, so the same effort can read as a different speed; and GPS pace wobbles on tight bends and under tree cover, which explains the odd number mid-run. The math runs in your browser, with no server involved.

Frequently asked questions

What pace do I need for a 50-minute 10K?

Does it work for walking?
