Scoring Carcassonne
What you score in Carcassonne comes down to which feature your meeple is sitting on. A completed city pays 2 points per tile + 2 points per shield. If the city is still open when the game ends, that drops to 1 per tile and 1 per shield. Roads give 1 point per tile, whether they close mid-game or are tallied at the end. A monastery (cloister) is worth 9 points once all 8 neighbors plus its own tile are in place, and scores partial credit otherwise at the end. Farms only count at the very end: 3 points for each completed city the farm feeds. So a closed 4-tile city holding 2 shields works out to 4·2 + 2·2 = 12 points. The game was designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede (2000) and won the Spiel des Jahres 2001.
Applications
Handy when you're mapping out strategy, tallying a session at a board game café, running a club tournament, or playing online on BoardGameArena. Carcassonne sits near the top of the tile-laying rankings on BoardGameGeek, and it's one of the games people reach for when they're just getting into the hobby.
FAQ
Do shields always double points? Not really. Each shield is worth 2 points in a completed city and 1 point in an incomplete one at the end. The word "double" is misleading; they just add a fixed amount.
When are farms scored? At the end of the game, and nowhere else. A farm earns 3 points for every completed city it borders.
Can monasteries score mid-game? They can. The moment all 8 surrounding tiles are down, the monastery is worth 9 points and the meeple comes back to you.
