Sizing a ceiling fan by room area
A rough rule of thumb: a 1.2 m (48") blade span handles around 12–15 m², while a 1.4 m (52") blade span works for roughly 15–20 m². Once you pass 25 m², reach for two fans rather than one giant unit. The air spreads more evenly that way and the whole thing runs quieter. To put numbers on it, a 14 m² bedroom is fine with a single 1.2 m fan, but a 30 m² living room does much better with a pair of 1.2–1.4 m fans. You'll find 3 to 5 speeds on most models, plus a reverse switch. Run it clockwise (downdraft) in summer; flip it counterclockwise (updraft) in winter so the warm air sitting near the ceiling gets pushed back down.
Applications and thermal comfort
You'll see these in bedrooms, living rooms, offices and shops alike. A ceiling fan never actually cools the air, but it produces a wind-chill effect of 2–4 °C, which means you lean less on the air conditioner and your power bill drops. What really counts is blade aerodynamics, not how many blades there are. Three blades with a good pitch will often shift more air than five flat ones. One thing people forget is cove lighting clearance: keep at least 30 cm between the blade tip and any lamp or wall, or you'll get those flickering stroboscopic shadows.
FAQ
Does a fan replace air conditioning? Not really, but the two work well together. Set the AC to 24–25 °C and add a fan and the room feels about as cool as 22 °C on its own, for less energy.
What is the reverse mode for? During winter the reversed rotation drives the warm air that collects near the ceiling back down to where people are. It's handy if your home has heating.
How high should the fan be installed? For safety, keep the blades at least 2.3 m above the floor. Leave 30 cm or more between the blades and the ceiling so the air can move freely.
