Country Capital Lookup

Homework, a pub quiz, a crossword clue: sometimes you just want to confirm one capital without opening a whole atlas. The friction in that kind of quick lookup is usually spelling. This page removes the accent problem, accepting any spelling of the same name, but it does expect the country written out in full, and written the way its own list stores it, which happens to be in Portuguese.

The data is a fixed table of fifty countries written straight into the code, with no API call behind it. Comparison strips accents on both sides, so japao, Japão and JAPÃO all match. What it will not do is partial matching or abbreviations: bras and USA find nothing and you get País não cadastrado, meaning country not listed. Country names and capitals are both stored in Portuguese, so you type Estados Unidos and read Pequim rather than Beijing.

A few entries depend on which convention was chosen, so here they are. South Africa returns Pretoria, the executive capital, while Cape Town is legislative and Bloemfontein judicial. Bolivia returns Sucre, the constitutional capital, even though the government sits in La Paz. Israel returns Jerusalem, a status disputed internationally. If a country is not among the fifty, the answer is the not-listed message, which is the table's boundary rather than a failure. Nothing leaves your browser.
