CEFR Language Learning Time Calculator

Estimates hours of study to reach a CEFR level (A1 to C2) in a language based on FSI difficulty category for Portuguese native speakers.

โ€”

Cumulative hours to reach each CEFR level

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) sorts language proficiency into six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2). Both the Cambridge English Profile and the Council of Europe put numbers on the cumulative guided learning hours each one demands: A1 ~80โ€“100h; A2 adds ~180โ€“200h; B1 adds ~350โ€“400h; B2 adds ~500โ€“600h; C1 adds ~700โ€“800h; C2 adds ~1.000โ€“1.200h. Treat those as a baseline for a Portuguese speaker tackling English. The FSI language categories shift the totals a lot. Category I, say Spanish, goes faster; Category IV, which covers Japanese, Arabic, Korean and Chinese, can run 2โ€“3ร— longer. Immersion โ€” studying abroad, working full days in the language โ€” speeds things up by roughly 30โ€“50%. As an example, moving from B1 to B2 in Category II usually means another 500โ€“600 hours of focused study backed by productive practice.

Applications

Handy when you're mapping out Cambridge certifications (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE), IELTS, TOEFL, DELE (Spanish), DELF/DALF (French), Goethe-Zertifikat (German), JLPT (Japanese), or an exchange program. Employers lean on CEFR when hiring (B2 is common for international roles, C1 for senior ones), and universities tend to ask for B2/C1 before admitting you to postgraduate study abroad.

FAQ

Are Duolingo hours equivalent? Only up to a point. Time in the app mainly drills recognition. Getting past B1 takes real listening, reading and conversation.

What is the FSI language category? The U.S. Foreign Service Institute ranks languages by how hard they are for native English speakers, from I (easiest) to IV (hardest). Apply the same logic to how far the target sits from Portuguese.

How is the level officially certified? You sit a standardized exam tied to the CEFR scale, such as Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced, IELTS bands, TOEFL iBT, or whatever the equivalent is for your language.

Can children reach C2 faster? They can, especially with early exposure and immersion. The hour figures above assume an adult following structured study.
