CGI Render Time Calculator
When you produce computer-generated imagery (CGI), the total render time comes down to three things: how complex each frame is, how many frames you have, and what resolution you output. That gives us total = frames × time_per_frame × resolution_multiplier². The resolution multiplier is squared because pixels grow in two directions at once, across the width and the height (HD = 1, 4K = 2, 8K = 4).
Per-frame time swings enormously. A stylized shot might come in under a minute, while a photorealistic ray-traced scene can run past 100 hours. Pixar's Toy Story (1995) averaged 17 hours per frame, and Monsters University (2013) climbed to 29 hours per frame once global illumination and fur simulation entered the picture. Modern path tracers trace light bounces physically, so render time tracks closely with sample count, how dense the geometry is, and how heavy the shaders get.
Applications
Studios lean on numbers like these to budget render farms running Arnold, RenderMan, Octane or Cycles. Cloud render services such as AWS Thinkbox Deadline, Google Compute Engine and Conductor let a small studio spin up thousands of nodes on demand and pay by the core-hour. Architects, VFX supervisors and indie animators run the same math whenever they schedule final pixel deliveries.
FAQ
Why does doubling resolution quadruple render time? Pixel count is width × height, so jumping from HD (1920×1080) to 4K (3840×2160) gives you four times the pixels. And since every pixel has to be shaded on its own, four times the pixels means four times the work.
Is GPU rendering always faster than CPU? For path tracing in engines like Octane, Redshift or Cycles GPU it usually is, often by a factor of 5 to 20. The exception is very memory-heavy scenes that blow past available VRAM, where the CPU still comes out ahead.
How big are professional render farms? Pixar runs a farm of around 24,000 cores. For Avatar: The Way of Water, Weta Digital pushed past 50,000 cores, drawing several megawatts of power at peak.
