What each part means
CNJ Resolution 65/2008 fixed the format NNNNNNN-DD.AAAA.J.TR.OOOO: a seven-digit sequential number per unit and year, a two-digit check number, the filing year, the branch of the Judiciary, the court inside that branch and the originating unit.
The check digits follow ISO 7064 MOD 97-10, the same scheme used by IBAN account numbers: append two zeros to the 18 remaining digits, take the remainder modulo 97 and subtract it from 98. A number ending in 8.26 belongs to the São Paulo state court; 5.02 is the 2nd Labour Court region.
Checking a Brazilian CNJ lawsuit number
Paste the number that arrived by message and find out whether it is intact before trying the court portal. In 0001234-03.2026.8.26.0100, the 8.26 says the case runs at the São Paulo state court and the 0100 points to the originating unit. When the check digits fail, the page shows the corrected number ready to copy, which is usually the real reason people look this up.
The layout comes from CNJ Resolution 65/2008: seven digits of sequential number per unit and year, two check digits, four for the filing year, one for the branch of the Judiciary, two for the court and four for the originating unit. Branch 4 is the Federal Justice, 5 is the Labour Justice and 8 is the State Justice. In the electoral, state and state military branches the next pair follows the official list of states.
The check digits use ISO 7064 MOD 97-10, the same scheme as an IBAN: take the remaining 18 digits, append two zeros, compute the remainder modulo 97 and subtract it from 98. One detail catches many people out: in the CNJ table Sergipe is 25 and São Paulo is 26, so 8.26 means the São Paulo court. Pasting a hundred numbers straight from a spreadsheet works too, with a summary and CSV export.
