Cosmopolitan Recipe Volume per Person

The Cosmopolitan, or just the "Cosmo", sits in the IBA "New Era" list, and you know it on sight: bright pink, with a citrus profile that stays in balance. Per glass, the reference build is 40 ml citron vodka + 15 ml triple sec + 15 ml cranberry juice + 10 ml lime juice, shaken over ice and double-strained into a chilled martini glass. Scaling up for a party is a matter of multiplying each measure by the head count, then padding it by roughly 15% so nobody goes without a refill.

Dale DeGroff's well-known 1990s recipe leans on Absolut Citron, and Cointreau is still the go-to triple sec. What really sent the drink around the world was the HBO series Sex and the City (1998–2004), where it became Carrie Bradshaw's signature order. That pink colour is all cranberry juice; reach for the unsweetened pure kind if you want it sharper and less syrupy.

Applications

This is a natural fit for ladies' nights, bridal showers, Valentine's Day events and themed cocktail parties. A 750 ml bottle of vodka gets you about 18 Cosmos, and a 1 L bottle of cranberry juice covers roughly 65 drinks. One thing not to skip: chill the martini glasses for at least 15 minutes first, because with this drink the look is half of why people order it.

FAQ

Can I use plain vodka instead of citron vodka? You can. Just add 5 ml more lime juice to make up for the citrus notes you lose.

What if I cannot find cranberry juice in Brazil? Larger supermarkets (Carrefour, Pão de Açúcar) and importers usually carry it. If you come up empty, red grape juice with a splash of lemon gets close to the same tartness.

How do I get the signature flamed orange peel garnish? Cut a coin-sized piece of orange peel and hold it over the glass, skin side down toward the surface. As you squeeze, pass a lit match between the peel and the drink. The citrus oils catch for a second and leave the cocktail smelling of orange.
