Switching Credit Card Brand — Savings Calculator
This weighs the net cost of two credit cards once you account for the annual fee and the cashback: net = annual fee − (monthly spend × 12 × cashback %). Land on the right card and R$ 600/year of fees can flip into R$ 630/year of cashback. That's a R$ 1 230 difference across 12 months for spending you'd do anyway.
Five brands are accepted in Brazil: Visa, Mastercard, Elo (Brazilian, with thinner international acceptance), American Express (premium perks, also narrower) and Hipercard (mostly domestic). The brand by itself tells you little. What matters is the issuer's actual product, so weigh the annual fee, the cashback %, miles per R$ 1 spent, lounge access and travel insurance.
Applications
If you fly often, look at the mileage programs: Smiles (Gol), LATAM Pass and Livelo (Bradesco/Banco do Brasil), which used to fold in Multiplus. Want cashback and nothing else? Nubank Ultravioleta gives back 1 % with no annual fee. Black and Infinite cards run R$ 1 000+ a year but throw in lounge access, concierge and premium travel insurance, which really only pays off once you're spending more than R$ 15 k/month. And with Pix already here and the Drex CBDC on the way, cards are losing ground for small purchases, so what you're really paying for now is the rewards, not the convenience of swiping.
FAQ
Visa or Mastercard — which is better? In practice acceptance is about the same, both here and abroad. Look at what the issuing bank offers (cashback, miles, fee) instead of the brand on the front.
Is Elo accepted abroad? It's getting better thanks to a partnership with Discover/Diners, but it still doesn't reach as far as Visa or Mastercard. If you travel internationally a lot, keep one of those as a backup.
Is a Black card worth the high annual fee? Only if you actually use the perks: the lounges, the travel insurance, the concierge, the accelerated miles. Spend under R$ 15 k a month and a no-fee cashback card usually comes out ahead.
