By the international definition agreed in 1959, one foot is exactly 0.3048 meters. From that you get 1 ft² = 0.092903 m² and 1 ft³ = 0.028317 m³. So a 200 sqft room works out to 18.58 m², and with an 8-foot ceiling that becomes 1,600 cu ft, which is 45.31 m³.
Feet are still the default in the United States, used informally in the United Kingdom, and they crop up in plenty of technical fields elsewhere. Think HVAC, where BTU and CFM ratings rule, aviation, where altitude is read in feet, and the American real estate market. FAQ
What is a "linear foot"? It's a foot measured along just one dimension. You see it with lumber, fabric, or shelving, where the width stays fixed and only the length changes.
Is "square foot" the same as "foot squared"? They both mean ft², yes. Watch out for "5 feet squared," though, which people often use to describe a 5×5 square (25 sqft). If there's any ambiguity, fall back on the numeric symbol.
How much AC for a room in sqft? The usual rule of thumb in the US is 20 BTU per sqft for a standard 8-foot ceiling. From there you nudge the number up or down for sun exposure, how many people use the room, and the electronics running in it.
