Cheques, contracts, receipts and invoices require the amount written in words, and getting the spelling or the agreement of the cents wrong looks careless. This tool converts a numeric value into words in Portuguese, already with the currency you choose.

Frequently asked questions

If I pick Dollar, does the text come out in English?

No. The words always come out in Portuguese, whatever currency sits in the dropdown; the only thing that changes is the unit name in the sentence, between reais, dólares and euros. That fits Brazilian cheques, receipts and contracts drawn up in a foreign currency, where the amount has to be spelled out in Portuguese even with the figure in dollars. For an amount spelled out in English words, this page will not help.

How many decimal places does it consider?

Two. The Valor field steps in hundredths and anything finer gets rounded off. The number splits into a whole part and cents, so 1234.56 comes out as "mil e duzentos e trinta e quatro reais e cinquenta e seis centavos". A negative amount works and arrives prefixed with "menos". One rounding quirk deserves attention: 1.999 ends up written as "um real e cem centavos" instead of rolling over to two reais, so type the amount with two decimals already.

Can it write amounts in the billions?

Yes, all the way to quadrillions. The internal scale table runs from mil up to quatrilhao, with singular and plural agreement, so 2500000 comes out as "dois milhoes e quinhentos mil reais" and 1000000000000 as "um trilhao de reais". Watch the preposition: when the amount ends on the scale word, Portuguese takes "de" — "dois milhoes de reais" — and drops it when another group follows, as in "um milhao e duzentos reais".
