The DAS-MEI barcode: monthly tax slip for Brazilian micro-entrepreneurs

The DAS-MEI (Documento de Arrecadação do Simples Nacional para o Microempreendedor Individual) is the single monthly tax slip every Brazilian MEI must pay to keep their formal status active. It is issued by the federal portal gov.br/mei and, after the 2022 BACEN integration, also as a PIX QR Code. The barcode follows the Receita Federal arrecadação standard — 44 digits starting with "8" — and is the same format used by GPS, DARF and other federal collection slips, distinct from the FEBRABAN bank-slip standard (which starts with the bank ID).

The slip always falls due on the 20th of each month (the legal "vencimento" never moves to the next business day for DAS-MEI — if the 20th is a Saturday, payment until Monday is still on-time per IN RFB). The 2024 amount is roughly R$ 75.90 for commerce/industry (5% of the minimum wage as INSS + R$ 1 ICMS), R$ 75.90 for services (INSS + R$ 5 ISS) and R$ 80.90 for the mixed activity. The values are reset every January when the federal minimum wage is updated.

Linha digitável vs barcode

The slip prints both a 1D barcode (Interleaved 2 of 5, 44 digits) and a linha digitável of 48 digits grouped as XXXXX.XXXXX XXXXX.XXXXXX XXXXX.XXXXXX X XXXXXXXXXXXXXX. The linha digitável carries extra mod-10 check digits per field so a teller can key it in even if the barcode is damaged. The last 14 digits encode the gross amount in cents (right-padded with zeros).

Late payment, multas and INSS benefits

Paying late incurs a 0.33% per day fine, capped at 20%, plus the Selic rate (cumulative monthly) — both calculated automatically when the slip is reissued via gov.br/mei. After roughly 24 months of non-payment, the Receita Federal flags the CNPJ as inadimplente and may cancel the MEI ex officio. Up to 60 monthly installments are available via the Refis program for clearing the backlog.

Regular DAS-MEI contributions count toward INSS benefits: retirement by age (65 male / 60 female with 15 years of contribution), auxílio-doença, salário-maternidade, auxílio-reclusão and pensão por morte. The carência (waiting period) is 12 months for most benefits and 10 months for salário-maternidade. Note that the MEI rate (5% of minimum wage) only entitles you to retirement on the minimum wage value — paying the 15% complement gives access to retirement on contribution time and higher amounts.

Common pitfalls

• Wrong activity (CNAE) on the CCMEI changes the ISS/ICMS column and the slip amount — always reconfirm before paying.
• Paying the wrong month: the slip's reference is encoded in the barcode; an old slip will not credit the current month.
• Exceeding R$ 81,000 annual revenue forces migration to ME (Microempresa) — the MEI status and DAS-MEI rate are lost on January 1st of the following year.
• PIX QR for DAS-MEI was enabled in 2022 — works in any bank app, same legal effect as paying by barcode.

FAQ

Can I delay the DAS without losing my MEI status? Yes for a few months — penalties apply, but you remain active. After about 24 months without any payment, the Receita Federal can cancel the CNPJ ex officio.

Are the barcodes generated here payable at a real bank? No. The math (check digits, length, structure) is valid for QA, but the document number is fictitious — banks will reject it during the Receita Federal lookup.

Can I pay the DAS-MEI with PIX? Yes — since 2022 the gov.br/mei portal issues a PIX QR alongside the barcode. The legal effect is the same and confirmation is instant.

What if my activity is mixed (commerce + service)? The DAS includes both ICMS and ISS columns and the slip amount is slightly higher (R$ 80.90 in 2024). The CCMEI must reflect both CNAEs for the slip to be correct.
