How often should you bathe a dog?

How often you bathe a dog comes down to its coat, how it lives, and the state of its skin. As a rough guide, short-haired dogs (Labrador, Beagle, Pinscher) do fine with a bath once a month. Long or curly coats (Shih Tzu, Poodle, Lhasa) usually want 2 to 3 times a month, and people tend to pair that with grooming. A working dog or a very active one that keeps getting muddy might need a rinse every week, whereas a calm indoor dog can stretch to six weeks between baths. Brachycephalic breeds with skin folds (Pug, French/English Bulldog) are a different story: wipe the folds daily and bathe them 1โ€“2ร— per week so dermatitis doesn't set in. Stick to a neutral-pH shampoo (โ‰ˆ7.0) formulated for dogs. Human shampoo runs too acidic and strips the protective layer. Wash too much and you'll dry out the skin, which leads to flaking, itching, and sometimes seborrhea.

Applications

Pet-shop bath-and-grooming counters and mobile groomers use this kind of schedule, as do Petlove and Cobasi subscription plans. Breeders lean on it to keep their care protocols consistent, and owners shift the frequency with the seasons (a hot, humid summer means more baths). Veterinary dermatologists also work from a set schedule when they prescribe medicated shampoos for allergies or fungal infections.

FAQ

Can I bathe a puppy? Wait until the full vaccination schedule is done, around 4 months. Until then, a dry shampoo or a damp cloth will do.

Is dry shampoo a substitute? It's handy between baths for knocking back odor, but it won't do what a full wash does for cleaning the skin and clearing parasites.

Does my dog need conditioner? Long coats tangle, so conditioner helps there. Short coats can generally skip it.

Why not human shampoo? Our skin sits at a pH of โ‰ˆ5.5 while a dog's is closer to โ‰ˆ7.0, so a human product throws off the canine acid mantle.
