DOI → APA Citation (manual)

An APA reference looks simple until you stall on the punctuation: period or comma after the journal, parentheses on the year, what comes before the volume. Fill the fields here and the line comes out assembled with authors, year, title, journal, volume with issue in parentheses, pages and the DOI already as a link. It beats reopening the manual for every new reference.

One 7th edition change still trips people up: the DOI goes in as a full URL, https://doi.org/10.xxxx, with no doi: prefix and no period after it. The tool builds it that way. Two things it will not do for you: it applies no italics, since the output is plain text, and it does not insert the comma before the ampersand. APA wants Silva, A., & Souza, B., so type that comma into the authors field.

After pasting into Word, italicize the journal name and the volume number, which APA requires and plain text cannot carry. For page ranges use an en dash (100–120) rather than a hyphen. If the article has an article number instead of pages, something like e0234567, put it in the pages field. Up to twenty authors are listed in full; from twenty-one on, list nineteen, an ellipsis, then the final author.
