Emerald grass (Zoysia japonica) quantity calculator

Emerald grass (Zoysia japonica) is Brazil's most popular residential lawn species, and it earns that spot with fine leaves, dense growth and a clean visual finish. It comes in sod slabs (“placas”) of 40 × 125 cm, so 0.5 m² apiece. To estimate how many slabs you need, use slabs = area_m² ÷ 0.5, or 16 slabs/m² if you're buying by the roll. Tack on another 5–10% for cuts and waste.

A 50 m² yard works out to roughly 100 slabs, or 50 m² of rolled turf. Plan a little extra anyway, since irregular borders eat into the count and a few pieces tend to need replacing while the lawn takes root, which means 15–30 days of heavy watering.

Applications

It suits residential lawns, condominiums, small commercial gardens and playgrounds in warm climates. For upkeep, mow to 3–5 cm, water 2–3 times a week once it's established, and feed it NPK 10-10-10 every 3–4 months. It handles partial shade as long as it gets at least 4 h of direct sun, and it's slow to bounce back after winter dormancy. Among Brazilian suppliers, Itograss and ManoaGrass are the names you'll run into most.

FAQ

What’s the difference between emerald and St. Augustine grass? Emerald has finer leaves and looks denser. St. Augustine (São Carlos) has wider leaves and copes with shade better.

How long does it take to root? Around 15 to 30 days with daily watering, and full coverage in 60–90 days.

Does it tolerate full sun? Yes. Emerald loves heat and full sun, which makes it a natural fit for the tropical and subtropical regions of Brazil.
