Dividend Yield of the VOO ETF

VOO is Vanguard's S&P 500 ETF, which Vanguard brought to market in 2010. Like SPY, it follows the S&P 500 index of around 500 large U.S. companies, the difference being a rock-bottom 0.03% expense ratio. This calculator finds its dividend yield as a percentage using yield = (annual dividend per share ÷ share price) × 100.

VOO's trailing yield usually sits near 1.1–1.3%. That's a touch above SPY, partly because the lower fee leaves a bit more cash to distribute. It pays quarterly and tends to be a core holding for buy-and-hold investors. Type in the current share price and the trailing 12-month distribution total, and you'll see how much of your return comes from income.

Applications

It's handy for projecting the annual income on a VOO position, stacking its yield up against bonds or savings accounts, or seeing how a rising price drags the running yield down. Long-term S&P 500 index investors lean on this metric a lot.

FAQ

Why is VOO's yield low? The S&P 500 leans toward growth names, so most of the return shows up as price gains rather than dividends.

VOO vs SPY? They track the same index. VOO's 0.03% fee undercuts SPY's 0.09%, which is why VOO is a favorite for holding over the long haul.

How often does it distribute? Every quarter. Add up the four payments to get the annual dividend this tool expects.
