EV Battery Degradation Over Time

As the cells in a lithium‑ion EV battery age, they slowly lose the ability to hold a charge. What's left is the State of Health, or SoH, which you can work out with SoH = initial capacity × (1 − annual degradation)^years. NMC chemistries (nickel‑manganese‑cobalt, found in Tesla, Hyundai and Kia cars) usually keep ~80% after 8‑10 years or 200,000 km, losing somewhere around 2‑3% a year in normal driving. LFP packs (lithium iron phosphate, like the BYD Blade) tend to hold up better and often sit at ~90% over the same period because the crystal structure is steadier.

Most carmakers back the pack with an 8‑year / 160,000 km warranty promising at least 70‑75% SoH. Tesla's impact reports and the numbers coming out of big Hyundai/Kia fleets line up with that in practice. What wears a battery down faster is leaning hard on DC fast charging, running it from 0 to 100% over and over, and parking it in extreme heat. Keep it roughly between 20‑80% and out of the sun and it lasts longer.

Applications

Use it to guess how much range is left after a few years behind the wheel, to size up a used‑EV before you buy, to figure residual value on a lease, or to put a number on battery‑replacement budgets for fleets and ride‑hailing operators.

FAQ

Is degradation linear? More or less. There's often a 3‑5% dip in the first year from the calendar effect, after which it eases to about 1‑2% a year for a long stretch and only picks up speed again near the end of the pack's life.

Does fast charging really hurt? Not as much as people fear. Work from Geotab and Recurrent puts the cost of occasional DC fast charging at roughly 1‑2% extra degradation over 5 years. The real damage comes from using it as your only charging method.

Can I replace just degraded modules? With a few brands, yes. Renault and BYD allow module‑level service, though most others just swap the whole pack. Independent refurbishers are starting to pop up in Brazil and the US.
