Fishing hook and bait by type

Hook sizes run on a backwards scale, No. 1 to No. 12, where a bigger number means a smaller hook. A No. 10 works for lambari and tilapinha, a No. 4 fits traira or piauara, and a No. 1 takes on tucunaré or robalo. Once you pass No. 1 the scale flips to 1/0, 2/0…10/0 for the bigger predators.

Bait falls into two camps. On the natural side you've got live shrimp (camarão), lambari, sardine and minhocuçu worms. The artificial side covers jig heads, plugs (poppers, walking baits), shads, spinnerbaits and flies. When a cold front rolls in or the water turns murky, natural bait tends to do better. Artificial lures shine when the fish are feeding hard, and they let you cover ground faster.

Applications

Planning a sport fishing trip, sorting out the tackle box, getting beginners started, staying square with IBAMA recreational-fishing rules. The yearly sport-fishing licence runs R$ 25–180 depending on category (amateur, embarked, sub-aquatic), and it's mandatory in federal waters. Catch-and-release with circle hooks cuts down gut-hooking and helps protect sea turtles in marine areas.

FAQ

What hook should I use for pacu? Go with a strong-shank No. 2 or No. 1 and bait it with corn, soy or fruit. Pacu has crushing teeth and will bend a weak hook without much trouble.

Is live bait always legal? No. To keep disease from spreading, some conservation units and pesque-pague venues ban live native species. Check the local rules and IBAMA Normative Instruction 25/2009.

Why a circle hook for sea turtles? Because its point curves inward, it grabs the corner of the mouth rather than the throat. A turtle hooked by accident can then be let go alive, which is why ICMBio rules require this gear on pelagic longlines.
