Birth Flower by Month

A tattoo with your kid's birth month flower, a themed bouquet, an invitation illustration, a planner sticker. Birth flowers came back into fashion, and it is easy to find lists that contradict each other. Type the month number here and the associated flower appears: January is carnation, June is rose, December is holly. It is a symbolic pairing inherited from old lists, handy for giving a gift some meaning.

The list comes from Victorian English tradition, which in turn borrows from the Roman calendar, and that makes it a northern hemisphere calendar. May's lily of the valley blooms in the European spring, and December's holly is a snow and winter plant, which in Brazil survives only as Christmas decor detached from any season. Tradition usually gives each month two flowers and the page shows one: August reads as poppy here and as gladiolus on many lists.

Before booking a tattoo or ordering an arrangement, look the plant up by its botanical name, because common names scramble things. Larkspur is the genus Delphinium, marigold points to Tagetes or Calendula depending on the list, and aster covers dozens of look alike species. The field takes only the month number, clamps anything outside 1 to 12 to the ends, and rounds decimals. Check with a local florist what is actually in season where you live.
