Daily hamster care time by weight

How long you spend on a hamster each day goes up a little with its size: minutes โ‰ˆ 15 + weight_g ร— 0.05. A typical day looks like checking food (5 min), topping up water (2 min), spot-cleaning the bedding (5 min), giving the wheel and cage a quick look (3 min), and supervised free-roam time, which runs anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. The full bedding change happens once a week.

A Sirian (Mesocricetus auratus) usually lives 2-3 years, while the dwarf species (Roborovski, Campbell, Winter White) tend to make it to 1.5-2 years. They're crepuscular and nocturnal, so leave them alone during the day rather than waking them up. The smallest cage you should use is 80ร—50 cm, which is the German DEGUSCHUTZ standard, though the German Hamster Association would rather see 100ร—50 cm. See also ANVISA and CFMV. Skip the exercise balls, since they force a bad posture and stress the animal.

Applications

Pricing for an exotic pet sitter, teaching a child about their first pet, looking after a classroom mascot (with a parent keeping an eye on things), and planning cage layouts โ€” an Ikea Detolf, for instance, gives more room than most commercial cages.

FAQ

Can hamsters live together? Sirians live alone, full stop. Dwarfs can sometimes be paired up, but as adults they often turn on each other, so housing them separately is the safer call.

Best bedding? Go with a paper-based product like Kaytee Clean & Cozy or Carefresh. Stay away from cedar and pine, which release toxic phenols.

Healthy diet? A good seed mix plus fresh vegetables such as carrot, broccoli, and dandelion. Keep sunflower seeds as an occasional treat, not a staple.
