Distance from Home in Magical Portal Steps (Fiction)
Here's a fantasy converter for you. It takes ordinary meters and turns them into “portal steps,” on the assumption that each step jumps a fixed distance through a magical threshold. The math behind it is nothing fancy, just steps = meters / meters_per_portal_step. Fiction loves a good portal. Harry Potter has Portkeys, Floo Powder, and Apparition. C. S. Lewis sends children through a wardrobe into Narnia. Doctor Who’s TARDIS is bigger on the inside, Stargate SG-1 runs on transport rings, and in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander Claire slips through the standing stones at Craigh na Dun.
In literary theory, a portal or threshold marks the “crossing” phase of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey, the moment of leaving the ordinary world for the special one. What this calculator hands you is a back-of-the-spellbook estimate of how many such crossings it would take to get back home.
Applications
Use it for RPG travel mechanics, fanfiction worldbuilding, escape-room puzzle prompts, or classroom creative-writing exercises. It also works if you just want to plan the shortest route from your couch to Hogwarts (results may vary).
FAQ
Are magical portals real? Nope. This is folklore and fiction. The output is meant for storytelling, not your morning commute.
How much distance does one portal step cover? Whatever your story decides. Just tweak the constant in the JS to match your universe.
Does the TARDIS count? Strictly speaking it’s a ship, not a portal. But we won’t tell the Doctor if you don’t.
