Housefly (Musca domestica) lifespan
In a moderate climate the housefly runs through egg (1d) → larva (5-14d) → pupa (3-6d) → adult (14-28d). An adult female lays 75 to 150 eggs at a time and does this 5 or 6 times over her life, so on paper one pair could leave millions of descendants by the end of a season. What really drives the whole thing is temperature. At 35°C the cycle squeezes down to 7-10 days. Drop it to 15°C and it drags out past 50.
They act as mechanical carriers of E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter. The fly picks up pathogens off waste and drops them onto food through its legs and proboscis. That is why Anvisa RDC 216/2004 requires screened windows and active fly control in food-service establishments.
Applications
Restaurants, slaughterhouses and dairies (SIF/MAPA), waste management, IPM programs running alongside dengue/Zika vector control, and plain household hygiene.
FAQ
What attracts houseflies? Organic waste, the smell of fermentation, animal feces and any food left out. Keep bins covered with lids that actually seal.
Are they dangerous? Only indirectly, through the pathogens they carry. Musca domestica does not bite at all (the stable fly Stomoxys does).
Best control method? IPM, layered: cut the source (waste), block entry (screens), set traps (UV and sticky) and bring in biological control (Muscidifurax wasps).
