The conversion happens on a canvas inside your browser, so the file never leaves your machine, which matters when it is a document, a chat screenshot or a personal photo.

The detail that surprises people most: transparency. JPEG has no alpha channel, and in this tool the WebP conversion also paints the background white before drawing, so a transparent PNG converted to either of them comes out on a white background. Only PNG output preserves transparency, and in that case the quality slider disappears, because PNG is lossless. Animated GIFs load, but only the first frame gets converted. The size shown for the result is an estimate.

For photos, JPEG between 80 and 90 percent usually balances weight and looks; below 70, artifacts show up in smooth areas like sky and skin. Logos and icons are better off as PNG. If you pick WebP in a browser that cannot encode it (an older Safari, for instance), the output may silently be PNG under a .webp extension; if the size looks odd, be suspicious. And keep the original: quality lost to JPEG never comes back.
