The rough estimate works from canopy volume and a leaf density that varies by species. A medium tree with a 5 m diameter canopy usually carries around 50,000 leaves. A mature 200-year-old oak can hold 200,000+; a commercial eucalyptus averages roughly 30,000 narrower leaves. Think of each leaf as a tiny solar panel. At noon, one leaf can intercept about 3 W of sunlight and runs photosynthesis right at its surface. Add that up across the whole canopy and a mature tree pulls in dozens of kilograms of CO2 a year, giving off oxygen as a byproduct.

It comes in handy for urban ecology and landscape design (forecasting shade and leaf litter), for CO2 sequestration estimates in carbon projects, for school biology exercises, and for home gardening planning around composting, gutter maintenance and how much raking lies ahead.

How accurate is the estimate? It is order-of-magnitude at best. Real counts swing with species, age, pruning and the season. Treat the number as intuition, not an inventory.
Do conifers have "leaves"? They do. Needles are just modified leaves, and a mature pine can hold hundreds of thousands of them, each one lasting 2-4 years.
How much CO2 does a tree absorb? A typical mature tree takes in somewhere around 20-25 kg of CO2 per year, with the exact figure depending on the species and its growth phase.
