Arete in Mage: The Ascension

White Wolf put out Mage: The Ascension in 1993. A revised second edition followed, and the line eventually arrived at the Mage 20th Anniversary edition (M20) in 2015. Arete measures a willworker’s magical essence. It runs from 1 (Initiate) up to 10 (Archmage / Oracle), and it caps two things at once: the dice pool you roll to channel magic, and how high any single Sphere can climb. Buying a new dot costs experience points tied to the next rating, with the classic formula being new rating × 8 XP. You also have to sit through an introspective Seeking with the Storyteller.

Magic runs through the nine Spheres: Correspondence, Entropy, Forces, Spirit, Time, Life, Matter, Prime and Mind. Each player picks one of the nine Traditions of the Council, anything from the Hermetic Order of Hermes to the Akashic Brotherhood or the Cult of Ecstasy. They stand against the consensus reality that the Technocracy enforces, whose conventions turn science into a weapon against the Awakened.

Applications

Arete progression is how Storytellers and players keep a long campaign moving. Every dot stands for months of meditation, brushes with Quiet, and Paradox risk. In exchange it opens up new Sphere ranks, which makes room for more vulgar effects and rotes that reach further.

FAQ

What is the maximum Arete? Player characters top out at 10. In the lore, though, Arete 10 sits right on the edge of Ascension and tends to be kept for NPC Oracles and Masters.

Does Arete limit Sphere ratings? It does. No Sphere can climb past your current Arete, so mages end up bouncing back and forth between raising Arete and raising individual Spheres.

How is Paradox related? Every Arete success you land on vulgar magic invites a Paradox backlash. A higher Arete gives you more raw power, but it can also pile up more Paradox along the way.
