Margarita Recipe Volume per Person

Walk into almost any bar and someone is ordering a Margarita. The International Bartenders Association (IBA) keeps it on its list of recognized cocktails, and the order tickets around the world tend to agree. Per glass, the standard pour runs 50 ml tequila + 30 ml triple sec + 20 ml lime juice, served on the rocks with a salted rim. Scaling it up for an event is no headache: multiply each measure by your headcount and tack on roughly 15%, which covers the refills and the spills that always seem to happen.

A decent tequila goes a long way here. José Cuervo Tradicional, Patrón Silver and Don Julio Blanco all make for a smoother drink, and when a bartender wants a triple sec that won't let them down, Cointreau is usually the bottle that comes off the shelf. Where the cocktail actually came from is anyone's guess. One story credits Carlos "Danny" Herrera in 1948 at Rancho La Gloria; another puts its birth in 1930s Tijuana. The frozen version keeps the same proportions but blends them with crushed ice, and once summer hits you'll spot it at just about every Brazilian beach bar.

Applications

The calculator helps you stock the bar for weddings, corporate happy hours, Mexican-themed dinners or a Cinco de Mayo party. Tequila has been catching on in Brazil since International Tequila Day (July 24) gave it a push, and bar owners can lean on the numbers to figure out how many bottles to buy (a 750 ml bottle gives you roughly 15 doses), plus the triple sec and limes. Count on one lime for every two cocktails so juicing losses don't leave you short.

FAQ

Can I replace tequila with mezcal? Sure. You end up with a Mezcalita, which brings a smoky note to the glass. Just keep the volumes exactly the same.

How much salt do I need for the rims? Around 2 g of coarse salt per glass, so a 200 g pack will see you through roughly 100 servings.

What if guests prefer it less sweet? Drop the triple sec to 20 ml and bump the lime juice up to 25 ml. To go further, the Tommy's Margarita drops the orange liqueur altogether and leans on agave syrup instead.
