MDF-e number: cargo manifest, model 58 and transit obligations

The MDF-e (Manifesto Eletronico de Documentos Fiscais) is a Brazilian electronic document, model 58, that consolidates and manifests the set of NF-es and CT-es physically inside a vehicle during transit. It is essentially the "Ctrl+F of what is on the truck": a tax authority inspector can read the MDF-e and know every piece of cargo and every freight contract in that vehicle at that moment. The numbering uses the same tuple as NF-e/CT-e โ€” (CNPJ, mod=58, serie, nMDF) โ€” and a 44-digit access key for global uniqueness.

It is mandatory for interstate and intermunicipal cargo transport whenever there is at least one NF-e or CT-e onboard. Goods crossing state lines without an open MDF-e are subject to apprehension at fiscal posts.

Who issues and when

  • Carriers (transportadoras) at the start of every trip โ€” aggregating the CT-es they will move.
  • Shippers doing own transport (carga propria) โ€” when there is no third-party CT-e, the manufacturer or distributor issues both the NF-es and the manifest.
  • Cooperatives and equiparados when transporting goods on behalf of associates.

Structure and required fields

A valid MDF-e identifies:

  • Vehicle โ€” license plate (placa), RENAVAM, capacity.
  • Driver โ€” CPF and full name (condutor).
  • Route โ€” UF inicio (state of origin), UF fim (state of destination), intermediate UFs traversed.
  • Linked documents โ€” list of NF-e access keys and CT-e access keys onboard.
  • Cargo totals โ€” total value, total weight, number of volumes.
  • Modal โ€” rodoviario (most common), ferroviario, aereo, aquaviario.

Events: cancellation and mandatory encerramento

The two critical events are:

  • Cancelamento โ€” only allowed before the transit started.
  • Encerramento โ€” mandatory closure event upon arrival at destination. Leaving an MDF-e open is a fiscal infraction with progressive fines, and the issuing CNPJ is blocked from emitting new manifests until cleared.

Carriers usually deploy mobile apps that allow drivers to trigger the encerramento via GPS arrival; large fleets integrate it into TMS systems.

Relationship with NF-e and CT-e

The three documents form a layered model:

  • NF-e (55) โ€” describes the product/commercial transaction.
  • CT-e (57) โ€” describes the freight contract for moving those goods.
  • MDF-e (58) โ€” aggregates the physical cargo currently in a vehicle.

Issuance goes through Sefaz Brasil Nacional, the unified MDF-e portal. The printed companion is the DAMDFE, kept inside the cabin for inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Does an individual (pessoa fisica) need an MDF-e? Only when doing interstate transport of merchandise. Personal effects without commercial value generally do not require it.

Do I have to close the manifest on arrival? Yes โ€” the encerramento event is mandatory. Open MDF-es trigger fines and block further issuance.

Is the MDF-e linked to a CT-e? Yes. When the carrier issues CT-es for the same cargo, both reference the same physical load โ€” the MDF-e aggregates the CT-es onboard.

Can a single vehicle carry several MDF-es? Generally one open MDF-e per vehicle per trip; fractional cargo with multiple CT-es is aggregated into that single MDF-e.

Are these numbers valid for real emission? No. This generator produces fake sequential numbers strictly for ERP integration tests and homologation โ€” they will not authorize against the SEFAZ.
