New vehicle plate registration (Brazil)
In Brazil a new vehicle has to be licensed at DETRAN within 30 days of purchase, under CTB art. 124. Once the dealer files the paperwork, the plate usually shows up in 3-10 business days. SP through Poupatempo tends to be quicker, around 3-5 days, while RJ and MG often run 7-10. As for cost, figure SP R$ 350-450, RJ R$ 400, MG R$ 320 and RS R$ 380, all of which moves with the UF fees.
The Mercosul plates, set by CONTRAN Resolução 780/2019, took over from the old yellow standard between 2018 and 2020. For a ZeroKm car the dealer normally takes care of the registration ("emplacamento") on the buyer's behalf. You'll need the NF eletrônica, the IPVA quota and DPVAT, which was extinct from 2020 to 2023 and came back in 2024.
