Newspaper reading time
According to ANJ (Associação Nacional de Jornais) surveys, the average adult reader puts 15 ≤ t ≤ 30 minutes into a normal weekday edition. A Sunday edition can push that toward t ≈ 60 minutes. We get there with a layered reading model — headline → standfirst (chamada) → subsection → full text — since most articles never get read in full.
Folha de S.Paulo (~100k digital subscribers in 2023) and O Globo (~250k) describe behaviour close to what UOL's digital-only newsroom sees. People skim the front page, settle into two or three articles, and run their eyes over whatever is left. What really moves the total is how fat the edition is. A weekday paper is slim, midweek runs standard, the weekend expands, and Sunday arrives stuffed with supplements.
Applications
Media-planning teams reach for this when they size daily news routines. Schools use it to build news-literacy classes. Content marketers check their long-form pieces against the “Sunday paper” budget, and editors lean on it to work out how many articles actually fit a reader’s realistic attention window.
FAQ
Do digital and print yield the same time? Not usually. Digital editions run shorter on average because readers click in and out. Print pulls people into longer continuous sessions, and that effect is strongest on Sundays.
Why count the headline as a layer? On 60–70% of articles, readers stop at headline plus standfirst. Leave that layer out of the model and you badly overestimate how much gets read in full.
Does the Sunday supplement count? It does. Supplements covering culture, economy and sports inflate the edition by 30–100%, so Sunday reading comes out at roughly double a weekday session.
