Russian baby names: structure, patronymics and meaning
A full Russian name has three parts: имя (given name), отчество (patronymic, derived from the father's name) and фамилия (family name). For example, "Ivan Petrovich Ivanov" means "Ivan, son of Petr, of the Ivanov family". The patronymic adds -ovich / -evich for men and -ovna / -evna for women — Maria daughter of Sergei becomes "Maria Sergeyevna". In Russia the patronymic is used in formal address (teachers, bosses) instead of "Mr./Mrs."; Brazilian and Western registries simply drop it.
Most popular Russian baby names today
- Girls: Sofia (София "wisdom"), Anastasia (Анастасия "resurrection"), Maria (Мария), Polina (Полина), Anna (Анна "grace"), Alisa (Алиса), Ekaterina (Екатерина "pure").
- Boys: Alexander (Александр "protector"), Mikhail (Михаил "who is like God"), Maxim (Максим "greatest"), Artem (Артём "safe"), Daniil (Даниил "God is my judge"), Lev (Лев "lion"), Ivan (Иван — Russian John).
Diminutives and hypocoristics
Russian nicknames operate in layers: a single name can be shortened to a friendly form, then to an affectionate one, then to a baby-talk variant. Yelena (Елена) becomes Lena, then Lenochka, then Lenusya. Alexander or Alexandra (unisex) collapse to Sasha; Mikhail to Misha; Ekaterina to Katya or Katyusha; Aleksei to Lyosha; Dmitri to Dima. The formal-vs-colloquial gap is dramatic: a teacher is always "Yelena Sergeyevna", never "Lena", and using a diminutive without permission is rude in business contexts.
Family surnames and gender suffix
Russian surnames are gendered. The masculine forms -ov, -in, -sky take feminine endings for women: Ivanov / Ivanova, Pushkin / Pushkina, Tchaikovsky / Tchaikovskaya. Brazilian registries often record the masculine form for both spouses, which technically distorts the Russian convention but is administratively simpler. Origins of given names trace back to biblical roots (Maria, Ivan, Yelizaveta), Greek via the Byzantine Orthodox Church (Sofia, Alexandra, Anastasia) and Slavic-pagan layers (Lyudmila "people's love", Svetlana "light").
Cyrillic, transliteration and the Soviet era
Russian writes names in Cyrillic (Кирилл, Анастасия). When registered abroad they are transliterated into Latin script — but there is no single standard: GOST, ISO 9, BGN/PCGN and Russian passport rules all produce slightly different spellings. "Александр" can appear as Alexander, Aleksandr or Aleksander; "Юрий" as Yuri, Yury or Iurii. After the 1917 Revolution Soviet parents briefly invented ideological names like Vladlen (Vladimir Lenin), Stalina, Traktor or Elektrifikatsiya; most fell out of fashion by 1960. Russian-Brazilian families descend mostly from post-1917 White émigrés and later Soviet-era emigration — small but visible in São Paulo and Rio.
FAQ
Can I register the patronymic in Brazil? Rarely — Brazilian civil registry does not require it, and including "Petrovich" as a middle name is unusual. Most families simply pick the given name and surname.
How do I write a Cyrillic name on a Brazilian birth certificate? Brazilian registries only accept the Latin alphabet, so the name is transliterated. Choose the spelling that matches the bearer's passport for consistency across documents.
Is Brazilian "Maria" the same as Russian "Mariya"? Yes — both descend from the Hebrew Miryam through Greek and Latin. The Russian form is written Мария and pronounced "Ma-RI-ya".
What about stress and pronunciation? Russian stress is meaningful and not marked in writing. Names sound very different from their Latin spelling — "Yelena" stresses the middle ("ye-LE-na"), "Mikhail" stresses the last ("mi-kha-IL"). Mispronunciation is the most common giveaway of a foreign speaker.
