Naming a dog: training, breeds and behaviour

A name that fits the breed often hits a stereotype, and that is fine. German Shepherd: Rex (the Hollywood standard since the 1920s). Golden Retriever: Buddy (from Air Bud). French Bulldog: Frenchie, Croissant. Chihuahua: Taquito, Princess, Nacho. Husky: Snow, Yukon, Aspen. Big dog, strong name; small dog, diminutive — but break the rule freely. "Thor" on a 4 kg Maltese is funnier than any pun.

Adopt before you buy

Numbers worth knowing

Canine gestation lasts 60–65 days; the average litter is around 5 puppies, though large breeds can deliver 12. A puppy goes home at 8 weeks minimum — earlier separation harms behaviour for life. The first vaccination card (V8 or V10, plus rabies) carries the puppy's name, birth date and weight: pick the name before the first vet visit so the card stays consistent.

Two dogs — should the names sound alike? No. Similar names (Bob and Tom; Mel and Mell) confuse recall. Pick distinct stress patterns.

Is a weird name a problem? Only for the human. The dog learns whatever sound is paired with food and praise.
