Paint Coverage Calculator

Compute paint liters needed for an area, given coverage per liter and coats.

Paint yield per liter

The formula is liters = (area × coats) / yield, then add 10% for losses. Typical yields per coat: acrylic latex 12–14 m²/L (a 3.6 L gallon covers ~40–50 m² in one coat), synthetic enamel 10–12 m²/L, varnish 8–10 m²/L, epoxy 8–10 m²/L, textured paint 6–8 m²/L. The default is 2–3 coats (white over white); up to 4 coats when changing color (dark → light). Premium paints offer higher coverage and washability — Brazilian standard NBR 15079 classifies water-based paints as Premium / Standard / Económica by yield, hiding power and wash resistance.

Example: 60 m² wall, latex 13 m²/L, 2 coats → (60 × 2) / 13 = 9.23 L × 1.10 = 10.2 L (round up to 3 gallons of 3.6 L).

Applications

Construction budgeting, repaint planning, façade work (requires acrylic or elastomeric paint for waterproofing), painter quotes verification, retail estimates at Leroy Merlin / Telhanorte / C&C.

FAQ

Why is real yield lower than the can label? Manufacturers assume smooth walls, single light color and skilled application. Real yield drops 20–30% on textured surfaces or dark substrates.

Can I skip the 10% margin? Not recommended — touch-ups, roller absorption and edges always consume more than the math suggests.

Premium vs economy: is it worth it? Premium covers in fewer coats and lasts longer between repaints — usually cheaper per year despite costing 50–100% more upfront.
