Stellar Parallax & the Cosmic Distance Ladder
Parallax is the apparent shift in a star’s position against more distant background stars as Earth orbits the Sun. By measuring the half-angle p (in arcseconds) of that shift over a baseline of 1 AU, the distance follows the elegantly simple relation d (pc) = 1 / p (arcsec). One parsec is the distance at which 1 AU subtends 1 arcsecond — about 3.26 light-years or 3.086 × 1016 m.
This was the first direct, geometric method to gauge interstellar distances. Friedrich Bessel succeeded in 1838 by measuring 61 Cygni (p ≈ 0.314″, d ≈ 3.18 pc), settling centuries of debate about whether stars were close lamps or distant suns. Parallax remains the bedrock of the cosmic distance ladder: every Cepheid, Type Ia supernova and Hubble-constant measurement traces back to a parallax calibration.
Applications
ESA’s Hipparcos mission (1989–1993) catalogued ≈118,000 stars to milliarcsecond precision (reaching ≈100 pc reliably). Its successor Gaia (2014–present) has measured parallaxes for ≈1.5 billion stars at microarcsecond (µas) precision, extending direct geometric distances out to ≈10 kpc — halfway across the Milky Way. The Gaia catalogue is used to map Galactic structure, find runaway stars, calibrate stellar models and discover unseen companions.
FAQ
Why is the parsec defined that way? It encodes the geometry: parallax angle × distance = baseline. With baseline = 1 AU and angle in arcseconds, distance in parsecs equals 1/p — no conversion factor needed.
What limits parallax measurements? Angular precision. From the ground, atmospheric blur caps you near 0.01″ (≈100 pc). From space, Gaia reaches ≈25 µas for bright stars, pushing the useful range past 10 kpc.
Does parallax work for galaxies? No — even the nearest galaxies are millions of parsecs away, far beyond any feasible baseline. For extragalactic distances astronomers use standard candles (Cepheids, supernovae) calibrated against parallax-measured stars.
