Area of a parallelogram

A parallelogram is a four-sided figure with two pairs of parallel sides, where opposite sides match in length and opposite angles match in size. Take a base b and its matching height h (the perpendicular gap between the two parallel sides that hold the base) and the area is A = b·h. So for b = 6 m and h = 4 m, A = 24 m². There's an alternative when you have two adjacent sides a, b and the angle θ between them: A = a·b·sin(θ).

The diagonals always cut each other in half, but they don't have to meet at a right angle. That only happens once the parallelogram becomes a rhombus with all sides equal, or a square. The familiar special cases are the rectangle (θ = 90°), the rhombus (a = b) and the square, which is both at once. Written with vectors, the area is the magnitude of the cross product |u × v| of the two side vectors, the same as the absolute value of the 2×2 determinant of their components.

Applications: physics, CAD and linear algebra

One of the first things you learn in mechanics is the parallelogram rule for combining forces and velocities: line up two vectors tail-to-tail and complete the parallelogram. CAD and 3D modelling lean on the same shape, since parallelogram area is the building block for working out surface area through triangulation. And in linear algebra a 2×2 matrix sends the unit square to a parallelogram whose area equals the absolute value of the matrix determinant. That's the reason the determinant tells you how much a linear transformation stretches or shrinks area.

FAQ

Why is the height not the same as the slanted side? The height h measures straight across, perpendicular to the two parallel sides. It isn't the length of the oblique side. Plug the slanted side in by mistake and you'll come out with too much area, unless the figure is already a rectangle.

How does it relate to the triangle? Slice a parallelogram along a diagonal and you get two congruent triangles. That's why the triangle area A = (b·h)/2 comes out to exactly half of a parallelogram sharing the same base and height.

What if I only know the sides and one diagonal? Run the law of cosines first to pin down an interior angle, then feed it into A = a·b·sin(θ).

Perimeter of a parallelogram? It's P = 2(a + b), with a and b standing for the two different side lengths.
